Russian Warship Varyag

I went down to Pier 30-32 today to have a look at the Russian warship Varyag which is making the first visit from a Russian warship to the SF Bay Area in 147 years.

The Varyag is a Slava class battle cruiser and is currently the flagship of Russia’s Pacific fleet.

Armed with 16 guided cruise missiles, an assortment of anti-aircraft weapons, anti-submarine weapons, and a dual turret gun capable of 90 rounds per minute, it is quite a formidable and impressive vessel which can pack quite a punch.

The only public tour of the ship was held early Thursday. An SFPD officer I spoke with estimated that there were just over 5,000 people in line to get a rare tour of the ship, but only 2,000 got to take the tour while the rest were turned away.
